5 Key benefits of kettlebells

While kettlebells have been used for health and fitness purposes for many years, they have only really become very popular since the emergence of CrossFit in the mid-2000s.

Using kettlebells during your workouts will provide you with several key benefits and advantages – many of which people don’t seem to consider.

While barbells and dumbbells are very beneficial for training, it does sometimes pay to mix things up slightly. Here we will be taking a look at 5 key benefits of kettlebells for working out.

Mix things up

One of the biggest advantages associated with working out with kettlebells is the fact that they provide users with the opportunity to mix things up and to change their training slightly.

One of the most effective ways of building muscle and burning fat is to keep the body guessing, which means that you will have to keep trying new things to keep it guessing.

Using kettlebells instead of free weights, and some machines are a great way of mixing up your training. Not only will this help to keep the body guessing, but it will also help to make your training more enjoyable.

Functional training

When it comes to working out, nowadays personal trainers and athletes alike, use the term ‘functional’ a lot more. Functional fitness is fitness that can be carried out and incorporated into the real world.

Kettlebells, because of the basic body mechanics of each movement, help to promote functional fitness and conditioning. Not only do they help build muscle, but they also increase functional strength, and work on your conditioning and endurance as well.

Because many kettlebell exercises work the core, the stronger your core, the stronger you become by proxy.

Great for the joints

Another great reason to start working out with kettlebells, is the fact that they are much more forgiving on the joints than other forms of exercise, especially those involving free weights.

If you perform, say, kettlebell squats, they will be much better for the knees than heavy barbell squats. The movements and motions associated with each kettlebell exercise are fluid and each transition is much smoother and far better for your joints, providing you perform the exercise correctly.

Getting your form right can be tricky at first, especially if you are used to freeing weights, but once you get the hang of things you’ll soon see and feel the benefits.

Can be used in place of free weights

One of the best things about using kettlebells is the fact that they are adaptable and can therefore be used in place of free weights for a wide variety of exercises. Whether your joints are sore, or if you just want a break from barbells and dumbbells, you can perform virtually any free weight exercise with kettlebells.

Great for use at home

If you have limited space at home but want to create a designated workout area, kettlebells are perfect.

They are small enough to take up very little room, but they can be utilized to provide a full-body workout that not only builds muscle and burns fat, but also helps to promote functional fitness in the process.

Who needs an oversized bench or multi-gym when all you need is a set or two of kettlebells?
